Greater Houston has festivities taking place all through the year including concerts, festivals, fairs and sporting events.
The list below presents an overview of the major events in the Houston area.
- January
- College Baseball
- From the crack of the bat to the slide on into home, NCAA baseball packs a wallop of home run frenzy for what’s oft called America’s favorite pastime. Diamond action starts in January, continuing through most of June.

- Elvis Birthday Celebration
- On the first weekend in January, Sam Houston Race Park begins its new season of live thoroughbred racing with a birthday party for Elvis, featuring a peanut butter and banana sandwich eating contest, an Elvis look-alike competition, and many more activities. - Cordua International Festival of Flavors Week
- In mid-January, the Cordua family of restaurants and its Artista restaurant, located in the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts at 800 Bagby, hosts a week long celebration of Peruvian cuisine prepared by chefs from Peru and local executive chefs from Cordua area restaurants. - Gardere Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory
- In mid-January, the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Christ hosts the annual Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP Oratory Competition in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which includes a performance by the Salvation Army Choir. Call (713) 867-3286 for more information.
- Historic Walking Tours
- On the fourth Sunday of every month, the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance conducts guided walking tours of historically and/or architecturally key landmarks. Call (713) 216-5000 for more information.

- Susan G. Komen Foundation Pink Tie Gala
- In mid-February, the Houston affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation holds its Pink Tie Gala and Luxury Auction at the InterContinental Hotel, to benefit research and assistance programs for those afflicted with breast cancer. - Texas Home and Garden Show
- In mid-February, over 1,500 exhibitors will presents interactive exhibits and programs on all aspects of home maintenance and gardening, with an emphasis on green living, at the Reliant Center, at the north end of Reliant Park. Call (800) 654-1480 for more information.
- March
- Brain Night at the Museum
- Presented annually in conjunction with the University of Texas Health Science Center, the free evening showcases how the brain works, with dissection of a sheep’s brain, a video and more. Call (713) 521-1515 for more information.
- Komen Cancer Foundation Pink Tie Gala
- The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Houston Affiliate hosts its annual fundraiser for breast cancer research. Venue may vary from year to year. Call (713) 783-9188 for more information.
- River Oaks Garden Club Azalia Trail
- Rain or shine, this annual event benefiting area charities provides an extravagant showcase of Azalia Trail flower power. Call (713) 523-2483 for more information.
- Bayou City Art Festival
- After juried selection, more than 300 artists move into Houston’s Memorial Park for this 30-plus-year-old annual event. Call (713) 521-0133 for more information.
- April
- Major League Baseball
- Nothing signals advent of spring more than baseball with a capital B, tightly meshed into American culture with historic firsts, icon performances, record-setting events, and traditions from hot dogs slathered in mustard to unexpected curveballs, and seventh-inning stretches. Books and movies about baseball are fine and dandy, but nothing beats Major League Baseball action, playing out each season from April through the World Series.

- Major League Soccer
- There’s no end to the excitement each season as Major League Soccer teams from both the eastern and western conferences vie for glory in regular season matches, on to the play offs and cup finals.

- Bayou City Cajun Fest

- Japan Festival

- Easter Weekend at Kemah Boardwalk

- May
- Houston Fitness Fest
- In early to mid May, all of the Les Mills fitness-to-music workout programs are presented in an all day fitness workshop at Westside Tennis & Fitness. Call (713) 783-1620 for more information.
- Asian Pacific Heritage Festival
- This annual parade and festival is at the Alief Community Park in southwest Houston. Call (713) 784-1112 for more information.
- Art Car Weekend
- Quirky to the max, decorated cars, bicycles, lawn mowers and almost anything on wheels lead the Art Car Parade, oldest of its kind, capping a weekend of revelry including the Main Street Drag and Art Car Ball. Call (713) 926-6368 for more information.
- Clear Lake Greek Festival

- Treasures of Texas Gala

- Kentucky Derby Celebration

- U.S. Open Sporting Clays Championship

- Juneteenth

- July
- BP Power of Freedom Festival
- This annual downtown Fourth of July celebration takes place in Sam Houston Park and Bayou Park. Call (713) 522-9723 for more information.
- Fourth of July at Miller Outdoor Theatre
- The Houston Symphony performs its annual extravaganza at Hermann Park including Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture accompanied by a 16 cannon salute and fireworks. Call (713) 284-8350 for more information.
- Independence Day Celebration
- Sam Houston Race Park hosts a day of entertainment with kids’ fun and live quarter horse racing, capped by a fireworks extravaganza. Call (281) 807-8760 for more information.
- Origami Festival at Tansu
- Tansu in the Houston Heights stages an Origami Festival with exhibits, hands-on workshops, and free demonstrations. Festival events include a cocktail reception with the artists. Call (713) 880-5100 for more information.
- ArtHouston

- August
- Annual Blessing of the Fleet
- Decorated shrimp boats and pleasure craft receive blessings from the officiating priest and minister, in early August. Call (281) 334-9880 for more information.
- Make Mine Music Fest
- Benefitting the Texas Music Project and Houston area non-profits, the Make Mine Texas Music Fest staged at the Humble Rodeo Arena & Expo Center covers cumbias to honky-tonk, with crafts, food, and plenty for kids. Call (713) 692-1935 for more information.
- Houston International Jazz Festival
- Some of summer’s hottest jazz emanates from big names gathering to perform downtown. Call (713) 839-7000 for more information.
- Houston Tidelanders Barbershop Show
- For men’s a cappella barbershop harmony, the Houston Tidelanders presents Tidelander Reality, an annual show with an 80-plus voice chorus, props and costumes. The chorus, members of the SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America), was charted in 1946 and ranks as one of Houston’s oldest musical organizations. - Houston Shakespeare Festival

- September
- National Football League
- If it’s fall and you’re ready for some football, count on the National Football League to deliver non-stop grid action, leading to playoffs, and the incomparable Super Bowl. The NFL has come a long way since its 1920 founding in Canton, Ohio at Ralph Hay’s Hupmobile dealership. NFL action was first televised in 1939 when NBC broadcast within New York City. The NFL’s Longest Day was on Christmas, 1971, in a playoff between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins, and Miami’s 17-0 Perfect Season unfolded the following year. But that’s history, and prospects for new milestones start in September.

- College Football
- NCAA Football, created in 1997 to promote college football ideals, makes no bones about the importance of each game. Losing at any time during the season can thwart a team's chances for postseason action or an NCAA Championship. No wonder NCAA Football marketers have adopted a tagline of "NCAA Football: Every Game Counts."

- Turkish Festival

- Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
- On the first Saturday morning in October, runners gather at Sam Houston Park off Allen Parkway, with the start line at downtown's Bagby & Clay, to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program, which supports breast cancer research and education, screening and treatment in Houston and neighboring areas. - Texas Renaissance Festival
- Starting in October, continuing for seven weekends in Plantersville, the Texas Renaissance Festival recreates an English 16th century village. Call (281) 356-2178 for more information.
- Ghost Walks
- Starting at the Franklin Street Coffee House throughout October, Ghost Walks provide opportunity to get into the Halloween spirit on a leisurely two-mile MetroRail ride and stroll featuring urban legends and true tales of deceased Houstonians. - Monster Mash Halloween Party

- November
- College Basketball
- First devised by James Naismith in 1891, with the first recorded collegiate game in 1893, legions testify there’s no sound so soothing as a basketball whooshing through the net after a flick of the wrist. NCAA basketball brings grass roots hoop dreams to an entirely new level each fall, building toward March Madness, the NCAA Division Basketball Championships.

- International Quilt Festival
- In late October or early November, more than 2,000 quilts and pieces of fabric art, original cloth dolls, and other textile arts are displayed at George R. - Day of the Dead Festival

- Foundation for Modern Music

- Via Colori

- Trot Your Turkey Off

- Holiday Lights Walks

- Kickstart Belt Ceremony

- Chanukah Fest

- Texas Champions Day

- Dickens on the Strand

- Christmas Boat Parade on Clear Lake
